You Can Be The Best Rider

Is Your Horse Happy with His Job?

Riding Idea of the Day! Riding Lesson, Horse Workout, Horse Training Idea
It has been said many times that to work your horse's mind, you need to move your horses's feet! Today's exercise will get both working! This exercise can be done with any discipline and is excellent for western and English riders alike.

-Start by rounding up as many poles as you can find - you can use wooden poles, thick PVC pipes, landscaping timbers, or even varying sizes of long sticks or branches, as long as they are substantial enough to promote good action from your horse.
-Set up the poles in a long line on the groud, in a straight line across your arena or workout area. Make sure they are at a proper distance apart for a medium size trot stride - approximate 6 to 7 feet apart for the average horse.
-Have your horse well warmed up, as this exercise will require a lot from him!
-Trot your horse through the poles - see how far he can get through them without tripping or mis-stepping. Many times, horses will chip in an extra step where they can, or overstep, taking two poles at a time when they rush.

Go through the line of poles several times, helping your horse improve more each time - help him balance and maintain a proper rhythm through the poles. Make sure you have a good deep seat or post through the poles. If you horse is taking two poles at a time, make use of as many half-halts as necessary, or slow down his approach to the line. If you have a very slow horse that throws an extra step inbetween a few of the poles, use your legs to encourage him through the line with good impulsion and energy.

Be sure to practice this exercise in both directions. If the horse is having a really hard time and just doesn't seem to figure it out, try adjusting the distance between the poles and see if that doesn't help your horse fix the problems.

There are a lot of books on the market for riding lessons and instructors, but Teaching Horseback Riding Lessons is a niche all its own. Read More...

How I Came To Teach: The Story of a Riding Instructor
Have you ever wondered what makes a little girl fall in love with horses? After all, what is it that could possibly entice someone to fashion their entire life around these huge animals, these smelly, stubborn animals that thrive on human intervention? Maybe it's the excitement, the danger, the passion that fills your senses as you even merely enter the presence of these magnificent, amazing, beautiful creatures God created. Maybe it's the thrill of flying through pasture land, finally feeling free of the pressing issues of the world. Maybe it's the joy of watching a small child learn to balance, steer, and stop a horse, the incredible fascination on their faces. Read More...
